edifis, a chamber concerto for bassoon and four strings (2012)
A work made up of three movements: the first, inspired by the Cage paintings of Gerhard Richter; a set of five 'shims' that can be played in any order or distributed throughout the rest of concert's program; an acoustic remix of an original chasse after the 14th century contrapuntal form.
Consortium commission, organized by Marc Vallon, Professor of Bassoon, UW–Madison, includes faculty from University of Michigan, University of Iowa, University of Oklahoma, Texas Tech and Sacramento State.
Performances: Marc Vallon and ensemble, UW-Madison, Fall 2012.
String Quartet No. 1: The “London” Quartet (2010)
A three-movement work, in some ways the most "classical" piece I've written, in others the most "radical." The movements are fast-slow-fast, out of the Italian concerto tradition, and the subtitle is (obviously) a reference, not only to the city where it was premiered, but to Haydn's "Paris" Quartets and "London" Symphonies.
Performances: The Halcyon Quartet ; London, UK (March 2010), Eastbourne, UK (April 2010)
tinnitus, for flute, violin, and viola (2006)
Written under the constraint of using only 100 notes, this piece sounds an A 440 throughout the piece that passes between the three instruments and moves in and out of the perception of the audience. This is one of several pieces that I have written exploring aural perception and aural illusions.
Performances: agevolmente: chamber music of David Dies, Albany Records, 2011
